EXPLORING
Having recently finished an MFA in Scenography, I feel like I have finally discovered and released the creative voice that I always new was inside me.
Creativity as a visual artist is a difficult thing to explore within traditional theatre structures, as the stage designer is often asked to mainly fulfil the desires of the director and playwright. They are not as encouraged to discover their own creative interpretation, as that might require the hinder the other members of the creative team. My experiences made me feel like a largely functional designer, which is why I chose to break away from theatre as I knew it, and travel to Europe to study Scenography; what I view as the future for live performances of all genres.
Although I work in several different mediums, I am generally exploring the same kinds of themes;
Tactile experience / Tacit knowledge
The idea of the Self & Connecting with it
Textures/ Materials/ Materiality
Sublime & Uncanny
Scale / Monumentalism / Presence / Absence
Immersion / Experiences / Interactivity / Facilitating conscious choice
Journeys / Transformation / Evolution
Explorations of Trauma
Challenging our trust in sight / the perceived importance placed on sight
The Performativity of materials / light/ space
You may see some of these concepts expressed in the works I have presented below.
If you would like to discuss any of these ideas further, or are interested in collaborating, please do get in touch! I am always interested in discussing potential new ideas or art works.
